Key Objective:

As a Commercial Lines Underwriter, you’ll operate at the heart of our underwriting platform. Using smart tech, strategic insight, and technical precision to optimize risk decisions and deliver winning broker outcomes. This isn’t manual mode underwriting!

Key Accountabilities:

  • Underwrite and manage a motor truck cargo portfolio, including cargo liability, contingent cargo, freight broker legal liability, warehouse legal liability, and related inland marine coverages
  • Conduct thorough MTC risk assessments—evaluating commodity types, haul routes, loading and unloading practices, carrier safety records (CVOR/NSC), packaging standards, and loss history to determine appropriate terms and pricing
  • Review incoming MTC submissions from brokers, delivering timely and well-reasoned underwriting decisions with clear coverage recommendations tailored to each risk
  • Identify and manage cargo risk accumulations, high-value shipments, and specialty commodity risks (e.g., refrigerated goods, hazardous materials, high-theft commodities) with appropriate coverage structures
  • Monitor MTC loss trends, cargo theft patterns, and industry developments to proactively refine underwriting appetite and guidelines
  • Support the underwriting of transportation risks, where they complement or are packaged with the MTC book
  • Build and maintain strong broker relationships by delivering responsive service, technical guidance, and consultative support across MTC and transportation coverages
  • Manage policy endorsements, cancellations, and modifications accurately while maintaining documentation and regulatory compliance across applicable provinces
  • Contribute MTC market intelligence and underwriting insights to product development and broker education initiatives
  • Champion Forward’s culture, values, and brand promise in all broker and internal stakeholder interactions

Forward offers:

  • Next-gen underwriting technology that streamlines workflows and amplifies your expertise
  • Your specialist knowledge matters here; you’ll have a strong voice in decisions, strategy, and solution design
  • In-person mentorship with tenured underwriters who are invested in your success
  • Ongoing education and professional development to help you advance to the next level of your career
  • A fast-paced, collaborative environment where your contributions directly impact company growth
  • Unlimited snacks because every great player needs fuel!

Job Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, with a primary focus on motor truck cargo or inland marine
  • CIP designation (or substantial progress toward completion); CAIB or other relevant industry credentials are an asset
  • Solid understanding of Canadian transportation regulations, CVOR/NSC carrier safety standards, and provincial cargo liability requirements
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills—you can articulate complex cargo risks clearly and explain coverage nuances to brokers with confidence
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and comfort learning new underwriting platforms and technology tools—tech-savvy is essential in our environment
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and deliver consistent results under pressure
  • Collaborative, inclusive, and transparent working style—you thrive in team environments and believe the best ideas come from open dialogue and diverse perspectives
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check
